How to Lose Weight For Life: Motivation 2 - How to Stay Motivated to Workout

In the beginning, finding motivation is a lot easier when progress moves very quickly. This honeymoon period doesn’t last forever and finding the motivation to continue, can be challenging at times, especially when your process begins to plateau and progress slows.

How to Stay Motivated: Breaking Through Physical Plateaus

Plateauing happens all the time to everyone. This happens when what you are doing no longer works and your progress slows to a halt. Whether that be a weight that is always too heavy or that extra pound you cannot lose. In your journey the path will not be a straight line, there are times when you will need to step back or find a new way. This is your body telling you that it needs to be either challenged differently or you need to slow down. You cannot keep doing the same thing and keep expecting the same result. At this point, you will need to take this on as a new challenge.

Work on a Different Aspect of your Excercise

If you are stuck at a weight that you just cannot seem to lift you may need to take a step back and work on the exercise differently. If it is a lift this may mean working on explosiveness with lighter weights, or control at different positions throughout the lift. Or maybe you need to work on a certain muscle group to make the lift easier.

If you are trying to lose more weight, but you are stuck at a certain weight. You may have to challenge your body with a different type of exercise to break it out of its comfort zone. Or even, take a break to allow your body to catch up.

There are many different plateaus you may face, but when you do it’s important to try and switch things up a bit to find what will work.

How to Stay Motivated: Breaking Through Mental Plateaus

Doing something over and over again is taxing for everyone, no matter how fun it was when you started. Consistent exercise can be mentally challenging for anyone. It is important to find ways to stop it from getting dry.

This may mean stepping back from your hard workout routine and taking it easier.

Add a New Element

This is If you are finding yourself complacent or less motivated you might want to add a new element to the mix. Change your environment, join a class, try different music, try a new lifting program, all are great ways to implement something new to reignite that motivation. Your body wants to be challenged in different ways, the variation will not only help you mentally but physically as well. A small change can go a long way to boost motivation, don’t be afraid to try something new.

Set New Goals

Eventually, you will hit your goals, but the journey does not end at that point. Setting a new goal once you reach your goal is very important, you should always be exercising with a goal in mind. If you do not have a goal you will most likely start to lose motivation. This is how to build long-term habits, similar to anything you do in life. This doesn’t mean you always have to go at a higher and higher intensity level but rather make sure you are working towards something.

If you had set a goal to drop to 170 lbs and you finally hit that goal, your next goal might be to maintain 170 lbs for a certain period of time. It is a lot easier to maintain weight than to lose weight. The intensity might be less than when you were trying to lose weight but keeping a goal to focus on is important.

How to Stay Motivated

Staying motivated is a mental challenge everyone faces. There will always be times you do not want to exercise, but keeping that consistency is the most important part of the process. The longer you are consistent the stronger the habit becomes and the less likely you will be to stray from the path. You will need to find out what motivates you and that may continuously change over time.
